Question: Relocating from Memphis to Chicago..any advice?
I am seriously considering moving from Memphis to Chicago. I know there will be a SERIOUS difference in the weather however I was there this past winter..and I survived. I'm curious to find out is how are the finance/accounting jobs there? Also, since i'm single (and I'm pretty friendly) how easy/bad to meet new people..especially men? Which areas would you suggest I reside? One has to remember that I'm from the south so we don't know how to drive on the snow/ice (lol). I will be moving w/ my car so I don't believe transporation would be a problem. Also, how the ethnic areas there? I'm a single black 32 year old w/ no kids, too. I'm open to everyone's opinions. Thanks!! Have a GREAT day!
Answer: So many subquestions, I'll try to do them each justice! OK:
1. Weather and driving: Your key to driving on ice and in the snow is to NOT slam on your brakes, ever (kind of like in the rain, hydroplaning only worse). SUVs will fly by you, but ignore them and drive as slow as you feel you need to in the slow lane. The only time I would say NOT to drive in the slow lane is if the snow is coming down faster than the plows can get to it, because if the snow is too high, you can get stuck. So, if an SUV is in the fast lane, get behind it and use its tracks if you can. If the snow is just too deep, it can also cause some damage to the undercarriage of your car, so just be wary and use common sense. Chicago is such a big city that often when it snows it does back and side streets last, and when they do get to your street you had better move your car that day, or you're be completely boxed in and better grab your shovel. Especially if you live in one of the older neighborhoods, beware neighbors bringing out buckets, chairs, and other strange objects to save parking. It's against city regulations, but never seems to be enforced with ticketing. Occasionally city trucks will come and take the stuff left in spots, but only rarely.
2. Finance And Accounting jobs. Generally, Chicago is an awesome area for the financial sector. With the real estate troubles the country has been having, and the large mergers that have affected a few Chicago corporations, it's been a bit of an off-season for hiring, but some large companies to look at would be Hewitt, Northern Trust, ABN/AMRO or whatever it will be called when the merger is through, and anything on Wacker Drive or the Lasalle/presidents area of the Loop.
3. Where to find men. I'll tell you right now, if you're 32 and a professional woman, ignore Wrigleyville and Lincoln Park's bar scenes. If you're looking for men that can be your equal and not DePaul students, go to bars and restaurants in River North, MAYBE on Rush Street, and to live music places like the Green Dolphin. If you're looking mostly for black men, the South Loop has some new places that have diverse crowds but has proven popular at least in real estate with black professionals, as has the area of Bronzeville closest to the Loop. (Bronzeville is a historically black neighborhood with a lot of national cultural significance, and is slowly but steadily becoming safer and higher in property value).
4. Ethnic areas. Pilsen and Little Village and Logan Square are known for Latino communities (a little restaurant called May Street cafe in Pilsen is really worthwhile, as is a little Chilean place in Rogers Park, but I can't remember what it's called!). We have a Chinatown, but there's also Argyle St, which is sort of a Little Vietnam, and Bronzeville is the cultural center of the black community. Taylor Street/UIC/Bridgeport is sort of the Old Chicago/Little Italy/Daley Machine neighborhood, and actually one of my favorites. For good Italian (and Thai food--see Thai Garden restaurant on a warm summer night), Taylor Street cannot be beat (RoSals, Rosebud, Tuscany, etc).
5. The safest areas to live. It really just depends. Of course, Lincoln Park, Streeterville, and Gold Coast are the most classically 'nice' and safe areas, just traditionally, but the whole city is really undergoing a gentrification in that most neighborhoods north of Canaryville and excluding a certain area of the West Side where you'll see a lot of blue lights for drug monitoring are actually going to be safe (as long as you're always paying attention--any city is like that though) and getting safer. If you're looking for a good deal, think Bucktown, Evanston, South Loop, Ukrainian Village, some areas of Wrigleyville, Logan Square, etc...
Welcome to the best city in the world!
