Question: Is this out of line?

My fiance's mom just helped him to purchase and register a car. Due to an unfortunate identity theft incident 4 years ago, he did not have the credit to do it on his own. As much as the both of us appreciate her willingness to help, I believe she is getting a bit out of line. She borrowed against her 401K to finance the car, instead of just co-signing for him on his own auto loan, and my fiance will be paying her by check bi-weekly. Apparently, she now thinks that this gives her a say in our finances. She has been steadily lecturing him about OUR money and where it goes, saying that both of us blow through money, and insunuating that I waste most of it because I handle the finances in our household. This is entirely untrue, and I believe it is truly none of her business. This 'loan' is between the two of them, and is coming out of my fiance's pocket, not our household funds. How can I get her to back off? Is this not rude?

Answer: Fiance should grow a spine and tell her to restrain herself.

Don't you get involved. You are not married. If she starts talking about your finance with you, you have to let her know that this conversation is not going to happen. Be firm.

Lending someone money, no matter what your relationship with them, does not provide them with free reign to discuss and opinionate about all of your financial affairs.

Get the situation under control BEFORE you get married. She could become a tiresome meddler in other areas as well.

Question: What is the difference between a Finance generalist and a Finance specialist? How does your company define it?

We are working on a new job structure for our Finance Department. I would like to know if you have a speciality track and/or a generalist track how do you define it? What are some sample job titles?

Answer: There is no such thing as a Finance generalist or Finance specialist. Here are some sample job titles:

Financial Manager
Financial Controller
Financial Adviser
